The Running Start Program is available to qualified students who are enrolled in the public school and are in their Junior or Senior year of high school. The program is intended for students who are capable of doing college level academic work, who are independent learners and who can function at an adult level both socially and emotionally.

The student earns credit at the college level, while at the same time earning credit to complete their high school diploma. The student is responsible for their own transportation and the cost of textbooks. Formerly homeschooled and private school students are participating in the Running Start program.

All students must take a community college placement test to determine their eligibility. If they are not already enrolled in a public school they must enroll prior to entry into this program.

Important!!!

* One of the most important aspects of the Running Start process is to make timely appointments with the counselors, both at the Homeschool Resource Center and the community college where the student is attending. The appointments allow the necessary communication to take place, so that documentation of credits both for the high school diploma and the college degree are accurately recorded.

** You should make the appointment at least 72 hours before any deadline occurs.

**** College instructors deal only with their students, not the parents of students. Students are responsible for arranging classes, meeting with counselors and paying for the cost of below college level courses.(below 100 level)

Reimbursement Policies/ Tuition Payment

  • Because the student is enrolled in the public school, the tuition for the college is paid by the school district in which the child is enrolled. (Only for classes 100 level and higher)

  • District will not pay for Summer Classes or below 100 level classes.

Basic Program Requirements:

* Students who earn "no credit" during the quarter may not be able to continue participating in Running Start. At this time (2006-2007) Running Start students can enroll in a maximum of 18 credits/quarter.(12 - 18 credits are considered a full load)

** A minimum grade point average of 2.0 must be maintained in order to remain in the Running Start program. All courses at the community college will become a part of the student's permanent record.

How Do I enroll my Child ???

The student must take the community college placement test (often called the ASSET test). If the student scores at the college level for English (101+ level courses), they are eligible for Running Start.

Call the testing center of the community college (CC) directly to schedule an appointment for the test. You may be required to pay a nominal fee of approximately $15 prior to scheduling. You may (or may not) receive the test scores on the same day of the test.

If the student is eligible for the Running Start program obtain the following forms from the community college: * Complete the community college application form and return it to the registrar of the college. ** Obtain a Running Start "signatures" form, if available, and bring to the appointment with the HRC Site Manager.*** Pick up the community college courses catalog, and bring to the appointment with the HRC Site Manager.

**** Call the HRC to make an initial consultation appointment with the Site Manager.(Site Manager e-mail)

At HRC appointment bring: * The Running Start "signatures" form and course catalog. ** Complete the student enrollment form for the Homeschool Resource Center and give to the Site Manager.*** Discuss Running Start program and pertinent facts regarding HRC participation.

Make an appointment to meet with the HRC Running Start Counselor Karen Hanse, to discuss your specific Running Start plans and set up your permanent record. Some of the colleges send us their forms: *Documentation/transcripts of school work completed or home-based instruction annual assessment records.
