Former Students Remember . . . This page is waiting for your reminiscences. If you were a
student at Highland Park and you have a favorite memory, please send it along
to tkdaniels@seattleschools.org.
Put the word “Reminiscences” in the subject line. Thanks. Gary Hoyt (55)
remembers Highland Park School Second grade was in a portable within the inner courtyard
where the students would bring papers from home, or wherever we could get
them, for our annual paper drive. The teacher, when leaving the room, would
temporarily put me in charge of the classroom while she was gone. She would
appoint different students as “line leaders” after recess to re-enter the
classroom. One day, I was appointed line leader and Steve Field seemed to
think he should have that job. We got into a fight that sent him to the nurse’s
office. She left us mid-year to marry and move to Australia. Read much more of Gary’s reminiscences here. Someone had to go first. Thanks Gary. Now how
about you? Please share your memories with us. Tina Kelly remembers . . . It’s 1967 and one of my earliest memories of going to school is sitting on a pile of pillows in the first grade reading. We use to have recess in a "cage" under the overhang of the building (actually a fenced in area for our protection) and couldn't wait till we were big kids and could play on the real playground. I was sent to the portables for the second grade and for the third, while still on Highland Park grounds was actually in Sanislo (I was at the ground breaking for that school in the spring of 1970 but never attended in the actual building). But I will never forget the feeling of exhilaration I felt that first recess I was allowed to play on the big playground. My twin
sons now make the 3rd generation in my family to go to Highland park.
My Mother and most of her siblings all went there too. |
