Reading First at Highland Park

Stephanie Paolone – Reading Coach

Reading First is a grant to support reading in grades Kindergarten through Third provided by the Federal Government as a program under No Child Left Behind. Highland Park is fortunate to be in its third year of Reading First implementation. Our students have made much progress as readers with the help of Reading First resources and instruction.

Reading First provides many resources to Highland Park teachers and students, including:

Ř     Professional Development in Scientifically Research Based Reading Instructional Practices to all K-3 Teachers

Ř     A Full-Time Reading Coach to Support High Quality Reading Instruction

Ř     Tutoring Before, During and After School for Struggling Readers

Ř     Books, Curriculum and Many Other Classroom and Tutoring Materials for Students and Teachers

Reading First Instruction is based upon the findings of the National Reading Panel’s research. A parent guide to the Panel’s findings can be found at: http://www.nifl.gov/partnershipforreading/publications/reading_first2.html

Reading First students at Highland Park learn to read with the following curricula:

Kindergarten and First Grade:           Read Well, by Sopris West

Second and Third Grades:                  Houghton Mifflin
