Our History

 

 

 

 

Our Mission:

·          In partnership with families and the larger community, we will model behaviors that foster a love of learning and respect for self and others.

 

Our Vision:

·          To create lifelong learners instilled with positive self-images and the desire to become responsible and contributing citizens.

 

Our Community:

 

Highland Park serves a very ethnically diverse population with Hispanic and Asian students being the highest numbers.  Many students receive special services.  Special Education is offered to students with identified disabilities, and bilingual services are offered to students who have limited fluency in English.  Approximately 75% of our students receive either free or reduced lunch.

 

Our Programs and Services:

 

    Academic Programs…

·          90-minute reading block implementing scientifically based, reading researched programs support by our Reading First grant

·          National Science Foundation inquiry-based science curriculum for all students, K-5

·          Visual, hands-on math instruction for all students using “TERC Investigations”

·          Environmental studies partnership with Audubon Society for Grade 4

·          ESL (English as a Second Language) program

·          Special Education (Resource Room)

-also K-2 Emotional Behavior Disorder classroom

·          School-wide Title I

·          3 full-day kindergartens (8:50-3:00)

·          Before school tutoring for reading

·          Before school P.E. enrichment program (Circus Arts)

·          Multi-Arts program (Drama, Art & Music)

·          After School Clubs to reinforce specific interests

·          Computer Lab

·          Learning Resource Center (library) with over 17,000 books

·          Instrumental Music for grades 4 & 5

 

   Special Services…

·          Student Intervention Team (SIT) that supports staff on issues of student academic and/or behavioral progress and includes…

1.       half-time nurse

2.       half-time counselor

3.       psychologist (part time)

4.       speech therapist (part time)

5.       occupational therapist (part time)

6.       full-time Family Support Worker

·          Low class sizes

·          Counseling services – both school & community available

·          On-site before-and-after daycare

·          Active adult volunteer program supervised by Parent-Volunteer Coordinator

·          Computers in every classroom in addition to those in computer lab

·          Full-size, well-equipped gym

·          Fully equipped kitchen where all meals are prepared on-site

·          Greenhouse

·          Large asphalt playground attached to grass playfield of city park
