Every year our students work with Ms. Drake, our
multi-arts specialist, to choose a character that has made an impact in the
world. They use the library and the Internet to research their character.
Then, with the help of Ms. Drake and their fourth grade teachers and their parents,
they write and then edit speeches. These speeches are written in the first
person. Students memorize them and practice in front of their parents,
their teachers, Ms. Drake, other students, and in front of the video cameras
on their computers. During Biography Night (the pictures you see here),
parents, teachers, students and other community members go from room to
room in a “living museum,” they push a button on the student’s shoulder and
the student becomes the character they have chosen. They are in costume
while they do this. Later, students will go into the computer lab and
record their speeches, edit them and then produce a DVD to take home.
