I have exciting news for last year’s families and students!  My scores were just released for the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards…and I CERTIFIED!  I want to thank all the families who supported my work and videotaping of my class last year.  The students were amazing and I share this success with them.  Not only did assessors see great teaching, but great learners!

Reading Workshop:  Students will begin a genre study of historical fiction leading up to the American Revolution.  We will be integrating our social studies topics in our reading block , critically analyzing different texts, points of view and looking at voices of power heard and those not heard and how that shaped the events leading to the creation of our country.  Our time period will be the 1600’s focused on English colonization.

Every Day Math:  Our new unit is Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. We will review the meanings of fraction, decimal, and percent notations.  We will explore mixed numbers, comparing and ordering fractions, and finding equivalent fractions.  We will practice converting fractions into decimals and percents and review properties and construction of bar and circle graphs.   Our Unit 5 test will be December 18th.

Writing:  Students are now working on our second unit of study.  We are writing about our big ideas and thinking about life:  essay writing.  Students have moved on to developing powerful thesis statements that connect to them personally. We still hope to visit other classrooms to share our two narratives with others as they work through the writing process and live the lives of writer’s.

Science:  We will spend the month of December unpacking the Science WASL.  We will preview test scenarios and study student responses to improve our own responses to the scenarios.  We will look at the different written responses, such as conclusions and investigation procedures.  We will also be readying for our earth science unit, Land & Water

Homework is given each night of the week except for Friday.  Homework is due by the end of each day.  This allows for students to make good choices about time management to complete homework within the day if they have not completed it.  The homework will always consist of:  reading at least 40 minutes after school and math practice of that day’s learning goal or a review.  This homework should ideally take no more than 90 minutes.  If your student is struggling to complete his/her homework, please contact me so we can make accommodations for your student.  Evening homework should be practice, not a struggle.
