Homework

Homework is assigned Mondays-Thursdays. Assignments are due the following day. Every student is given a Homework Assignment Sheet for the week at the beginning of each week. This Homework Assignment Sheet is due on Fridays or the last day of the short week. Students earn certificates monthly for turning in all assignments!

Room 112

Mari Ikeda-Gomes

We are a hard working class that takes pride in our efforts and accomplishments. Respect and manners are important to our lives. Our class goal is to fill our fish bowl with as many fuzzies as possible on a monthly basis. Positive efforts and compliments earn a fuzzy. Surprising the teacher by turning in all homework for the entire class can earn a fuzzy. When the goal is reached, a class meeting is held to discuss how to “cash it in” for a reward.

A brief update of the subject areas being covered:

READING

We have started Walk to Read and everyone has adjusted the movement between classes very well! Each student has been placed according to last year’s test at the end of the year. Each morning we have Fluency drill of 3 one minute sessions and a 30 second retell session for each partner. I encourage everyone to practice daily to meet the goal of 110 words per minute by the end of the year.

WRITING

We are developing our writing skills through Writers Workshop. Some of the items we’ve been learning is sharing our hearts, “Cracking Open a Word”, thinking of several moments to write about (Watermelon) then zooming in on the moment (watermelon seed), understanding the difference between a weak lead and a strong lead. It is a number of skills we are learning every day, better known as a work in progress.

MATH

We are in our second year of Every Day Math and it is exciting to see the skills that were introduced to the class last year carrying over to our current year. Everyone has been assigned a password to access the Math games so your child can play the games that have been introduced in class.

SCIENCE

The class will be studying Rocks and Minerals in the Fall, Sound in the Winter, and Plant and Seed Development in the Spring.

HEALTH

We will be learning safe ways to take of ourselves through The Great Body Shop. Each month we will study a specific topic to be discussed. It is a wonderful curriculum. Currently, we’re finishing Steps to Respect which is an anti-bullying program. It has been exciting for the class.

Always do your best!

You earned a fuzzy for making a great choice!

Welcome to 2008!

We are having a great year! It is a year full of learning through projects, cooperative activities, teaming within Third Grade, just to name a few ideas..

We welcomed volunteers throughout the year. If you are interested in volunteering an hour a week or more in the future., please feel free to let me know. Any of the following areas are excellent ways to be involved and would be appreciated: running copies on the copy machine, cutting, stapling, tutoring, or assisting during class.

Our many goals included preparing for the WASL test during the Spring. This began as soon as school began so everyone was familiar with what would be expected.

School begins at 8:50am with the tardy bell at 8:55am. It is important for everyone to arrive at school on time. Attendance is taken promptly and announcements are made. Don’t miss out on the daily events and activities! School is dismissed at 3pm.

Homework is sent home Mon.-Thurs. and needs to be turned in the following day. If you don’t see any homework being brought home, feel free to let me know!
