I want to encourage everyone to READ, READ, READ and WRITE, WRITE, WRITE at home every day.  I also recommend that all children continue to study their multiplication facts daily at home so they can challenge me to prove mastery of each set.  Our goal is to master the 12 times tables by June, 2010.

REMEMBER:  Math homework is collected daily,  Tuesday through Friday!  The Weekly Reading Log is always due on Friday, or the last day of the week, if it is a short week.

READING

We teach our reading classes for 60 minutes each day.  The students are ability grouped and “Walk To Read”.  We also have 30 minutes of Independent Reading, when each student is actively reading books at their appropriate level.

Good readers apply all the reading strategies to every selection they read!!

Each reading class is teaching the same six comprehension strategies which are as follows:

PREDICT/INFER---Think about the title, illustrations and what you have read.  Tell what you think will happen next.  Try to figure out things the author does not say directly.

PHONICS/DECODING---Look carefully at the word.  Look for parts and sounds you know. Blend the sounds to read the word.  Ask, is it a word I know?  Does it make sense?

MONITOR/CLARIFY---Ask yourself if what you are reading makes sense?  If you don’t understand something, reread, read ahead, or use the illustrations.

QUESTION---Ask yourself questions that can be answered as you read or after you finish reading.

EVALUATE---Ask yourself how you FEEL about what you read.  Do I agree or disagree with it?

SUMMARIZE---Think about and tell the main ideas or important parts of the story in your own words.  (WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW)
