Biography

I was born in Venezuela, where I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.  I also have a Master’s Degree in Child Development from Iowa State University.

I have been teaching children from Kindergarten through High School for 15 years.

Years ago, I started working at Highland Park as a Bilingual and Special Education Instructional Assistant, which I enjoyed tremendously.  Now I’m back on my sixth year teaching Kindergarten and continuing to share this experience with a wonderful staff.

Philosophy

I believe in developing a loving and organized learning environment where children can feel emotionally and socially safe.  This will make them achieve academic success in order to become the responsible and honest future leaders of the world.

Curriculum

Reading

Read Well provides systematic and explicit instruction blended into the context of thematic activities that are designed to be developmentally appropriate.  It builds a foundation of oral language skills, phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension strategies, and vocabulary through carefully selected read alouds, songs, cheers, art projects, games, pocket chart activities, journal writing, and white board activities.

Writing

Writers’ Workshop establishes structures that lead to efficient and effective minilessons (direct and explicit instruction) and conferences (individually and in small groups).  Children generally produce many pieces of writing across a unit of study in highly structured yet responsive environments.  They draft and revise their writing in ways that incorporate the instruction they have received..

Math

Everyday Mathematics emphasizes a realistic approach to problem solving in everyday situations, other applications, and purely mathematical contexts; frequent and distributed practice of basic skills through ongoing program routines and mathematical games; an instructional approach that revisits topics regularly to ensure full concept development and long-term retention of learning; activities that explore a wide variety of mathematical content and offer opportunities for children to apply their skill and understanding to geometry, measurement, and algebra.

Science

Inquiry-Based Science Program ensures that all students are able to investigate scientifically in order to acquire conceptual understanding of their world, develop positive scientific attitudes, and become scientifically literate.

Health

The Great Body Shop is a comprehensive health, substance abuse, and violence prevention curriculum.  Each lesson in every unit will cover what the students know, what they need to learn, what they learned, and what helped them learn.
