Mission Statement The mission of Hawthorne Elementary School is to ensure the success of all children, particularly those from ethnic minority groups not previously achieving as well as other groups, and to demonstrate and communicate the educational practices that have been successful with students from those groups with other educators. |
Hawthorne School Discipline Philosophy At Hawthorne, learning is our top priority. We believe that appropriate behavior is a curriculum, something important to learn, just like reading, writing, and math. As such, we work to teach children how to manage their behaviors so that they can be successful in any situation. At school students are expected to think and act in ways that allow everyone to learn. Family partnerships are essential in teaching student's appropriate behaviors, and we ask for your assistance, expertise, and support as we work to help all children be successful. At Hawthorne, we follow these guidelines: With myself and others, Hawthorne's behavior guidelines are the basis for school-wide curriculum that includes instruction in cooperative learning, critical thinking, character education and conflict mediation. The curriculum is designed to help children understand how they can behave as responsible members of a learning community. When behavior issues surface, we will work together with the child and family to help the student to identify skills and strategies for changing that behavior. As much as possible, we work to give students positive reinforcement for all the things that they do well, and work towards consistent improvement in behavioral skills. We do not tolerate violence, bigotry, or bullying, and consider these acts to be serious breaches of our school community. In serious/and or repetitive situations, we will ask you for your assistance in applying firm, consistent, and fair discipline that is aligned with District Policy. Additionally, we take our role as adult role models very seriously. Children learn from watching how problems are solved by the adults in their lives, and therefore, we have to be very conscious of providing a positive modeling in all our adult interactions. Our efforts in this area can be one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Thank you for your continued support in this significant area of learning. |
