| The Stapp House in 1937 |
Across the street from Hamilton International Middle School, there is a house where a man once lived who had a great impact on Wallingford history. Stan Stapp lived at this house, at 4203 Woodlawn Avenue North, with his family. They lived in this house when Hamilton School was first built. Stan Stapp attended Interlake Elementary School (which is now the Wallingford Center), Hamilton Junior High, and then Lincoln High School. Stan’s brother started a newspaper company when Stan was only five years old; it was called the North Seattle Outlook. They printed all the newspapers in the basement. Stan Stapp took over the newspaper when he grew up.
Stan started working on the paper when he was just a toddler...
When Stan’s mother died, he wanted someone else to move in the house.
Upstairs in the house was a sun room where they had a piano and often had folk dancing parties. We’ll let Michele Anciaux Aoki, one time resident of 4203 Woodlawn, tell you the story…
About midnight everyone would gather at our house...
When you stand in front of the Stapp house, you can still hear kids playing and talking at the Hamilton School playground.
Now, when you visit the house, it looks brand new. Someone new lives there. There probably aren’t any printing presses in the basement anymore. If you stand and look at the house, you’ll hear the new residents’ wind chimes.
