Vietnam New Year

by Nancy

My mom’s favorite holiday in Vietnam was New Year; because she got to wear new clothes like Do Thai which are regular clothes that you can wear any where around the house or to the store, receive money in red envelopes called Li Xi. The Li Xi is all red with some kind of decoration on it. You wouldn’t like to taste it because it had no taste. One of my mom’s favorite treats is called mut. It is made out of dry fruit and it is multi colored. Before the Vietnamese New Year my mom needs to clean up every thing that is around the house, so the house can smell fresh for New Year. After she cleans the house she puts up a tree with yellow flowers called Bong Mai but the flowers are fake and it has no smell to it. Then she adds some red envelopes with money in them and hangs them on the tree. On that day she has to get mut treats and put it in a box that is shaped like a flower and is colored red, and puts it in the living room. And when guest come they can enjoy. As soon as New Year is over she counts all the money she got over the New Year days and will receive good luck for the whole year. When you open the red envelope you would like the sound when you open it, you can feel the good luck come to you. For me now I feel lucky because right now I can receive red envelopes, and get to wear one of my favorite Vietnamese dresses called Ao Dai because it represents a girl. I will carry this holiday to my family.
