Vietnamese New Year

by Binh

The most important and picturesque holiday in Vietnam is New Year. The celebration of New Year begins on the first day of the first month of the Lunar Calendar and continues for several days. It is a festival of sounds. The air is filled with the popping of firecrackers (dung…dung…), talking and laughing of young kids receiving the red envelopes called “li xi”(chuc ba ma song lau tram tuoi! Wishing our parents a long life!) Wishing words of relatives (chuc mung nam moi! Van su nhu y! nam moi phat tai! Nam moi tang luong deu deu!) Happy New Year! All wishes come true! Get raises often for the next year!) On the 1st day of New Year, my whole neighborhood smells so good from the burning of firecrackers. Sometimes I need to close my ears because the sounds of the firecrackers are very loud. Happy sounds are everywhere! Happiness is everywhere in every family!
