During the fall of 2003, Hamilton International Middle School (HIMS) 7th and 8th grade Vietnamese-American students participated in a special project with Jack Straw Productions to create personal radio vignettes about Vietnamese cultural celebrations. Under the direction of Jack Straw staff, engineers, and artists, and the instruction of guest artist and International Examiner editor Nhien Nguyen, HIMS students learned the arts of personal storytelling, radio performance, and audio production in order to create personal documentaries focusing on their own cultural heritage and traditions.
Throughout the project, students participated in all of the different aspects of creating and producing short radio vignettes, from researching to mixing final audio pieces. Under the guidance of professional writers and artists, students learned oral history interviewing techniques and interviewed family members about Vietnamese cultural celebrations. The the students composed their vignettes in both English and Vietnamese, with additional sound effects and music to enhance their stories. Students rehearsed their vignettes with Jack Straw vocal artists, and then went to five recording sessions at Jack Straw Productions' studios. In the studios, students worked with Jack Straw audio engineers to record their voices and create and record sound effects and music.
The Vietnamese Celebrations project has been compiled in the form of a CD, which each student received during a final celebration.
