Jack Straw Productions and Hamilton International Middle School
Eritrean Cultural Celebrations |
|
|
Project
Description: During the Fall and Winter of 2005, several groups of 6th
- 8th grade Eritrean American students at Hamilton International Middle
School worked with Eritrean Community leaders and Jack Straws writers
and audio engineers to discuss and explore Eritrean cultural celebrations.
Project Goals: Students will gain Language Arts skills in writing, reading,
listening, and speaking. Students will gain Social Studies skills as they
increase their knowledge of Eritrean cultural celebrations through oral
history interviews with family members. Students will gain technical skills
in the areas of audio production as they learn to work with the microphones,
use Pro-Tools (digital audio software), create sound effects, and create
a final mix of their pieces.

Part
I ~ Community Outreach
Throughout
the Summer and Fall of 2005, Jack Straw staff and engineers attended
Eritrean Cultural Celebrations, gathering community-produced audio
material and making contacts in Seattle's Eritrean community. These
events and interviews would be a springboard for the students' work
during the Fall and Winter.

|
|
|
Part II ~ Student Research
Beginning
in the Fall, a small group of Tghrina-speaking Eritrean American students
met afterschool on a regular basis, to begin exploring their Eritrean
Cultural traditions and how they carry over from Eritrea to the US.
These students conducted additional interviews with community members. |

Part III ~ Student
Celebration / Group Interviews and Production
Groups
of 6th grade students as well as combined groups of 7th and 8th grade
students met during school to interview each other in more detail
about their families' Eritrean cultural traditions and celebrations.
During these sessions, students recorded and edited interviews and
conversations with the help of Jack Straw's audio engineers. |
|
|
|
Part IV ~ Audio Production
Incorporating
all aspects of the student process from community outreach and fieldword
to the students' original material, Eritrean American students from
Hamilton International Middle School paint an audio portrait of maintaining
their cultural traditions in urban Seattle. |
