Mang Yue (Red Egg)

by Ka Ying (Karen)

My dad said we celebrate Mang Yue (Red Egg), which is for the baby's first month of his/her life, because the first month of the baby's life is very important. Do you know why it is important? Because the Chinese think if the baby lives past the first month then the baby will make it to the rest of their life.

The celebration of Mang Yue is when the parents of the baby invite all their relatives and friends to have lunch or dinner with them. During the celebration, the baby's parent will pass out the red eggs to everybody that is in the party. I'm not sure why they pass out the red eggs but I think it is for good luck, because in Chinese tradition red means lucky.

The baby also gets gifts from the guests. The gifts are mostly like a red packet (money in a red envelope), toys, clothes, and more.
