The Harvest Moon Festival

by Jennifer

The Harvest Moon Festival is one of the three major festivals on the lunar calendar. It is celebrated between the end of September and the beginning of October. On this Chinese holiday, we eat moon cakes, only I don’t eat the moon cakes much. We light up incense around the whole house on this holiday and other holidays too. Before I didn’t like the smell of incense, but now I have gotten used to it.

On this holiday, we celebrate the birth of a new moon. And also it’s a time to visit your relatives and friends. My family and I visit our close friends and closest relatives near us and give them a little present from us.

It’s not a big present or anything; it’s just a simple little gift. We give them this kind of Chinese candy. They aren’t all the same though. We also buy lots of moon cakes to give as presents. Most moon cakes are made of lotus seed. And most have egg yolk in them as filling. They are mostly square and have some design on the top like a Chinese word or some sort of flower.

My family sometimes eats a special dinner for this holiday. The kinds of food that are in this special dinner are; rice (of course), this kind noodle, bok choy, some more vegetables, sticky rice in bamboo leaves, barbeque pork, chicken, homemade cake and some more foods like that. All the kinds of food I eat are so good. Just thinking about it now makes me hungry.

Now that I have told you a little bit about how I celebrate the Harvest Moon Festival, it doesn't matter if you are Chinese, or American, you can celebrate it too because we all share the moon and its light given to us.
