For year two of local Native American music and dance, Shoshone tribesman Mark Smith returned to HIMS to teach intertribal drumming and dance. In the visual art class, Mishella Brien taught regalia design and construction. Students made dance sticks and shawls for use in the powwow. A set of values customarily passed down from tribal elders was incorporated into the lessons, with a new focus given at the start of the each day’s classes.
The culmination assembly at the end of the week was a school-wide powwow. Also in attendance were 350 sixth and seventh graders from Washington Middle School who will be transferring to HIMS next year as Seattle redistributes students and programs. The powwow included a welcoming ceremony at the start and ended with a Grand Exit with new incoming principal, Mr. Carter, leading out the men and the departing principal, Ms. Cryan, leading out the women.
