Fall 2004

Fulgencio Lazo returned to Hamilton International Middle School in the Fall of 2004 to work with students in visual arts, Spanish, and English-language-learners classes. Lazo first introduced students to the history of Mexican murals with a slideshow and discussion. Students in Spanish classes learned new vocabulary related to painting and visual arts. Students then brainstormed ideas about themes and provided sketches to the artist. Creating murals in the school setting takes patience and teamwork; not everyone's ideas get included, and it's important to consider the audience for the final piece.

Lazo synthesized the various ideas, and then led the students in sketching the mural onto plywood. Then the painting began - and the long process of completing the mural.

A big thank you goes to teachers Brittany Armstrong, Scott Cachopo, Wendy Chapman, Kathleen Dyer, and Claudia Sandler for incorporating this project into their classes. Thanks also to students in Ms. Greenbergs Bridges to Understanding project for providing photographs of this residency. Stop by Hamilton sometime to see the murals! This residencies is among projects sponsored by the International Arts Consortium, which serves John Stanford International School and Hamilton International Middle School, with major funding from Washington State Arts Commission, the International Business Breakfast, and PTSAs at each school. Thank you!
