ASB is the student-led government at HIMS. There are four officers - President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. In addition, there are 6th and 7th grade Senators.
The
ASB organized an assembly during September 11th to remember those that died
in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC and to continue their participation
in the companion flag project. 14 new flags were added to the companion flags
in the front hallway of Hamilton. Students from 13 classes introduced a flag
describing among other things what the colors symbolize, how the country is
similar and different from the United States and what the people in this particular
country have in common with people all over the world.
The ASB officers introduced themselves, read a poem, lead a moment of silence and even played some of the national anthems from the countries being introduced. The Companion Flag is a symbol that represents the identity of all human beings. It stands for everything that is done, held, known, or experienced in common by humans, notwithstanding their differences. The companion flag project is about showing that we are all connected although we have different lifestyles and cultures.
Four flags were donated this year from people in our community. A student
from last year donated the flag from Portugal and East Timor. Ms. Cryan the
Assistant Principal donated a flag from Costa Rica and a parent, Jeanette Norris,
donated a flag from Lithuania.
Another example of an ASB-sponsored activity is a school dance. There are three or four dances during the year. The dances are after school, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM. Tickets cost $2.00 to $3.00. Students going to the dance must sign in, and then stay at the dance until they are ready to leave school grounds. After school transportation is not provided. The first dance this year is on Fri., Nov. 14.
