My Birthday

by Wing Yi from China

April 30th is my birthday. Every year my parents have a party to celebrate it. April 30, 1999 was my favorite day. I woke up at ten in the morning. When I opened my eyes, I saw many cards. I walked in front of the cards and picked one up, and saw "Happy Birthday!" I was so pleased; I started to read all of the cards. In every card, the meanings are almost the same but the cards are from different people. I wondered, "Did my friends come over to my house?" Then I opened the door and walked to the living room. I didn't see any people in the living room but I saw a note on the table, and a glass of milk next to it.

Dear daughter,
Your father and I went shopping; we'll be back home at about eight tonight. This glass of milk is for you, and if you are hungry, you can eat a cup of noodles.
Bye, take care of yourself.

I was so sad after I saw the letter. Then I sat down on the sofa and turned on the television, and drank the milk. I felt dizzy, and then I fell down on the floor.

When I woke up, they all screamed "Happy Birthday" to me; I saw they were all of my friends. My father and my mother were there; they didn't go out and they had prepared many foods for me. Oh! I was so hungry, the food smelled so good. Then I ate and ate and ate until there was no more food. Then everybody sang a birthday song to me. When I was going to cut the cake, the doorbell rang. I opened the door, and saw my aunt. She said she was sorry that she was late, and I said, "That's okay, late is better than absent." After we all ate the birthday cake they started to give me my presents. My friends left. I saw there were many presents that I liked. There was a big doll, a game boy, a set of pencils, and my favorite CD. I was so sad that my friends left, but I was so happy and I will never forget this birthday party.
