My Ramadan Celebration

by Mohamed from Somalia

In Ramadan the Muslims fast. We don't eat during the day for one month. In Somalia it is very hot during Ramadan so it is hard to fast because we feel very hot and thirsty. My mother cooks a special meal in Ramadan. My family wakes up at midnight to eat. We don't eat during the day. Sometimes I don't wake up at night to eat because I like sleeping during the night. I get hungry in the daytime. The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year, which means that the Muslim calendar is based on the moon. When Ramadan is over, then it is Eid. In Eid we pray at the mosque. After my family is finished praying, I get five dollars from the Muslims at the mosque. Then we go home.
