New Year in Japan

by Hajime from Japan

When I was in Japan, I like New Year more than my birthday. The reason is I get lots of money. Japanese New Year is same as Chinese New Year. When I wake up on January 1st, I'm excited about getting money. My father hands it to me!

When I was ten years old on the morning of New Year I got one thousand yens, which is ten dollars! I went to the toy store and bought a toy. Then my family went to my grandparent's house. They gave me money too! We ate many Japanese foods, sashimi, miso soup, and sushi. I liked all of them. The special food for Japanese New Year is called mochi. It's really sticky so some people think it's dangerous because mochi can stick in the throat. It was a fun dinner.
