Chinese New Year

by Shao Jie "Jackie" from China

Chinese New Year was the biggest celebration in China and that is my favorite day in the whole year. Chinese New Year is so special that most people have two weeks vacation. One New Year's morning, my mom was busy praying to the goddess and the ancestors and burning incense. After that my parents gave me two red envelopes, "li-si," one from my mom and the other from my dad. Inside the envelopes was money. The red envelopes bring good luck for the coming year. I collected about two hundred dollars on New Year's Day. At noon, my relatives came to my house. First they gave me the red envelopes. My mom and my aunts cooked dinner; they made B.B.Q. duck, steamed chicken and many things for dinner. The food tasted delicious. We had wonderful conversations at the dinner table. The room filled with laughter and happiness. At night we watched fireworks outside and lit firecrackers. It was a fun evening. I watched the parade until 9 pm. I look forward to New Year's Day each year.
