Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen on the first day of school?

On the first Wednesday, only sixth graders attend school. At 7:40 am, all 6th graders go to the Auditorium. After that, sixth graders get a chance to practice with their locker, tour the school building, learn about the lunchroom, and meet teachers and classmates.

Class schedules are given to students on the first day of school. The schedules are NOT available before then. Seventh and eighth graders can pick up schedules between 12:30 and 1:30 on the first Wednesday.

What can I wear to school?

All students need to be safe and ready to do their best work. That means no distracting or disruptive clothing: no hats or gang-related head coverings, no sagging pants, no halter tops, no spaghetti straps, no see-through tops, no really short skirts or shorts (shorter than fingertip length). Heavy coats belong in your locker. And, please, don't bring any perfumes or colognes. They make some people very sick, and are against our school's no-fragrance policy.

Can I ride my skateboard, scooter, or bike to school?

Yes, you can ride to school. Be sure to wear a helmet. But, scooters and skateboards must be carried on school property. They are to be kept in your locker during the entire day. You can take scooters and skateboards on a school bus only in a carry bag that covers the wheels. Bikes must be parked and locked in the cage behind the school.

What if my bus doesn't come, or I have a problem with the bus route?

Call the Seattle Public School's Transportation Office at 206-298-7900

What do I do when I get to school?

After you arrive at school, be sure to get breakfast if you haven't had any at home! Then, you need to stay in the Auditorium or Lunchroom until the first bell rings at 7:25 AM. After the first bell, you can go to your locker, the library, or your first class (except on the first day of school when 6th graders report to the Auditorium).

How do I buy lunch or breakfast?

Hamilton offers a breakfast and lunch program. Breakfast costs $1.00 and lunch costs $2.00. (*See below for free and reduced rate meals.) Breakfast is served from 7:15 to 7:30 AM. Students can either pay for their food each day or pay ahead. If you want to pay ahead, bring cash or a check made out to "HIMS" and give it to the Lunchroom Manager. This is the best way to make sure you get a healthy lunch every day.

You can bring your lunch from home. You will need to keep it in your locker until lunchtime. You can buy milk in the Lunchroom for 40 cents.

Please don't plan on buying lunch from a vending machine or at a neighborhood store. There are no vending machines (soda pop or candy) for student use at Hamilton, and students are not allowed to leave the school property during the school day.

*Free and reduced meal forms are mailed home during the summer. If you received free or reduced rate meals last school year, you can keep on doing that for the first two weeks of school. A new free and reduced rate meal form must be completed and returned by the second week of school. If a new form is not received by this time, you will have to pay the full price for a breakfast or lunch. Reduced price lunches are 40 cents and reduced price breakfasts are 30 cents.

What do I do if I need to take medicine at school?

Be sure to bring a written note from your doctor and a note from your parent/guardian. Even if it's just an over-the-counter medicine such as aspirin, you need to have both notes. As soon as you get to school, take your medicine to the nurse's office. The nurse will keep it for you. The doctor's note needs to say what time you have to take the medicine so the nurse can help you find a good time to come from class. If there is no one in the nurse's office, go to the Attendance Office.
