Visually Impaired Students at
Nathan Hale

Dear Students: As many of you know, we have several visually impaired students attending Hale High School.  Three of these students use canes to travel.  To help you negotiate the hallways safely and help our students travel safely, I wold like to suggest the following:   Walk on the right side of the hallway  Don't come around the corner on the left side - our students often travel close to the wall in order to detect the corner Cross the hall behind the student, don't jump over their cane Be aware that our students often travel along the hall to a landmark and cross over to the classroom on the other side of the hall If one of our students is approaching you while you are at your locker,  say hello. They will then be aware of you and able to travel around you If one of our students is approaching you while standing in the hallway, please move out of the way Thanks so much for your help.  If you have any questions, contact me through the Resource room for students with visual impairments room 116.   Liz Garrels Orientation & Mobility Specialist
