Cancer Research Project

Our four Integrated Studies science classes initiated a project which completely eliminated the use of paper for a major curriculum project. The scope of this project was potentially daunting since it included all students in the 9th grade. One of our teachers learned the basics of html and the use of a simple html editor. She then created a web page to lead students through the research required for them to compile a report on the various forms of cancer, their cause, and treatment. The webpage contained links which the teacher knew to be valid sources of information for student research. You may view this web page at:

Next, an email account was created for every 9th grade student (with the exception of a few who already had one), and training was provided in our 32 station Electronic Classroom/Lab.
At this time Hale had a Linux server which allowed us to make email accounts for any students who desire them, and a dial-in facility to allow them to access their email from home. The students then compiled their information using a word processor, wrote their reports and emailed them to their teachers. Each teacher at Hale has an email account and a desktop computer in their room from which they can process their email.
Despite the possible difficulties one might expect from such an ambitious project, things went fairly smoothly, due largely to the efforts and careful planning of two of our science teachers. This project was actually done twice and involved over 200 students.
The resulting training included use of MS Word, Internet email, and the World Wide Web, all integrated seamlessly with our science project on cancer.
