The list of books on this year’s 10th Grade Summer Reading list are books which explore defined and dramatic CHARACTER CHANGE, character JOURNEY, and in many cases, the sea or ocean as a vehicle for part of the journey or change.  These books are best read in either sun or shade with flowing water nearby!

A.     Choose a book from the attached summer reading list

B.     Respond to the following prompts completely and clearly, responding to all parts of the prompt

C.     Be prepared to turn in your Summer Reading work and have a discussion on the FIRST day of school

ACTIVITY #1:  CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

You MUST use specific examples from THROUGHOUT the novel and page numbers to support your responses.  Using full or partial quotations is helpful too!  (2+ Pages, typed, double-spaced)

1.  Who is the main character?  Describe the main character’s appearance, social situation or role, and personality throughout the first part of the novel.  What do you feel is the cause of the character’s overall nature (EX:  Natural curiosity, competitive upbringing, etc.)  Support your response!

2.  Describe significant changes this character undergoes throughout the rest of the novel.  What are the most significant causes of these changes?  Why was it important for the character to go through those changes?

ACTIVITY #2:  CHOICES

You MUST use specific examples from THROUGHOUT the novel and page numbers to support your responses.  Using full or partial quotations is helpful too!  (1+ Pages, typed, double-spaced)

1.  Consider choices the main character makes throughout the course of the novel.  What are at least three significant choices the character makes and what are the notable effects of these choices?

2.  Based on the choices you indicated above, consider how things would have been different if the character had made dramatically different decisions.  Describe and explain.

ACTIVITY #3:  ROLE PLAY

1.  Become one of the main characters from the novel.  Writing in the style of the author of your novel, write a scene which involves a main character dealing with a choice or decision on his/her “journey”.  Try your best to have the characters speak and act as they truly would. (1+ pages)

2.      Write a brief “author’s statement” explaining the scene you wrote and what you hope it shows about that character’s identity.
