Senate Minutes – March 10, 2009

Principal’s report  :  Budget proposal

Senator Campbell explained Weighted Staffing Standards and what our  allocation means this year in comparison with last year.

9th grade program is richly staffed.  Budget subcommittee wanted to keep that commitment.

Some of the changes are

Currently we have                                                         funded 09-10

Part of the differences in the allocation come from a projected enrollment of 974.  The district is projecting enrollment to be down at all high schools except Rainier Beach.

 

Budget committee met on March 9 and came up with the following recommendations:

 

Waivers:

  1. Admin secretary convert from 260 to 220 (same as now )
  2. 2nd AP convert to Dean position (same as now)
  3. .4 of Activity Director converted to teaching (same as now)
  4. No Academic Dean (allocated)
  5. .5 Sp Ed certificated to Sp Ed classified (same as now)

 

Cuts

  1. Academic Dean Position (change of a position formerly funded by Pathways$$$)
  2. .8 Music position (cutting .2)
  3. .5 Sp Ed Certificated
  4. 1.0  Math Position (formerly funded by Pathways $$$)

 

 

If and when we get more money – a prioritized buy back list  (we think we have the money coming in to get through #4 and if we get more money we could continue with the priority list)

  1. H.S Teachers (maintain certificated staff at 08-09 level)
  2. Sp Ed IA’s
  3. .4 Counselor
  4. Counseling Secretary (with enhanced duties, for example college visits)
  5. Additional math FTE (.4- 1.0 whatever we can afford – funds Math Lab)
  6. Academic Dean/Beyond H.S support or Career Specialist
  7. .2 Nurse

 

Stipends are not on this list because they are covered in another way.

This is based on our current budget information. If there are changes we would have to revisit.

 

After the schools submit their budgets, the district will make decisions for where there will be RIFs (layoffs) for example they could decided to lay off Language Arts teachers who have less than 1.7 years experience.  Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about those RIFs.

New Business:

Mentorship Proposal:

 

            For the 2009-2010  school year students going into an upper house mentorship will not choose their own mentorship, but rather will be placed with a teacher who will be teaching them next year or has had them as a student in the past (whenever possible)

            If possible, senior mentees will continue with current mentorship teacher and will be placed in their class if said teacher has a senior section

            Running start students will be placed where they fit or will round out the very small mentorships to better spread out the kids and keep mentorships small

            Students may petition counselors for another mentorship if there is not a good fit between student and teacher that is considered by BOTH to be irreconcilable.

 

Senator Miyata suggested that 9th graders have their 1st period teacher for their mentorship.  10th graders should have one of there IS teachers or one of additional volunteers 

There was a question about the timeline for this and since it just has to be done before the end of the year, therefore it was suggested that the Mentorship subcommittee be convened for a greater discussion., therefore the proposal was tabled to the subcommittee.
