Nathan Hale Senate
Meeting…..December 12, 2006
- Meeting called to order at 4:20 p.m. by April
Lindner, Senate Chairperson.
- Minutes of last meeting approved.
- Attendance Policy discussion ensued:
- Clarification: Change “Students will be in class…..” to
“Students are expected to be in class….”
- Teachers present noted that for 150 students,
it’s very time consuming and even impossible for teachers to be
expected to notify students when 5 absences (3 for 9th
academy) have accumulated. It
was noted that all teachers will not consistently do this and the
belief exists that the attendance system has to be responsible for
completing this notification.
How to accomplish that as yet undetermined as well as unknown.
- Opinion exists that E-SIS should be capable
of generating not only the absence data reports, but the notifications
as well. Linda volunteered to
check with Wendy and E-SIS about exactly what the system can do and
what would need to be done to facilitate the reports and
notifications. She will report
back to April before the next meeting, January 9, 2007.
o
Suggestion was offered for the mentor teachers to be
responsible for checking attendance of their mentees once a week and notifying
the student and families if it is important for teachers to be involved in the
accountability for checking absences and notifying students and families.
- It was noted that E-SIS still counts block
days as 2 absences and the question was raised as to what it would
take to fix this? Linda will
add that to her research task.
- It was agreed the main sticking point of the
attendance issue is “who does the notification?” Teachers present would like to see
administration/counseling/attendance develop a plan/system to notify
students/parents about the (3)/5/10 absences.
- Linda proposed having counselors involved in the
intervention process much earlier than at the signing of the
attendance contract.
- The general unofficial consensus seemed to be
that no policy should be adopted until the issue of who does the
notification is settled.
- Motion was made by Shannon, seconded by Tony
and passed unanimously to postpone revision and adoption of Attendance
Policy until E-SIS options are known and administration is present to
work out details.
- The old attendance policy remains in effect
until this new policy is finalized and approved.
- Meeting adjourned at 3:58 p.m.
- Respectfully submitted by Linda Southall,
recorder for the day.
