INTEGRATED STUDIES EX[ECTATIONS

Attendance    Success in the Integrated Studies program is strongly dependent upon a student's commitment to regularly attend and actively participate in all class meetings. Past experience has consistently shown that students who are repeatedly absent from or tardy to class do not perform well on academic assessments. It is incumbent upon the student (not the teacher) to find out about and complete all work missed due to an absence or tardy. As with other classes at Nathan Hale, students accruing 10+ absences in an IS class must appeal to earn credit. Note, 3 unexcused tardies equal 1 unexcused absence.

Grading          Grades are based on daily Assignments/Logbook, Assessments, Projects, and Scholarly Responsibility.   The outside reading requirement and book talks will be factored into the Language Arts grade.  Integrated Projects will be factored into the grade for all three Integrated Studies classes.

A = 100 – 90 %           B = 89 – 80 %             C = 79 – 70 %             D = 69 – 60 %             N = below 60%

Honors           Honors is not “extra work”, but an opportunity for students to pursue a more advanced approach to learning in Integrated Studies.  ALL students are encouraged to pursue honors designation in Language Arts, World History, and Biology.  To earn honors credit, students must accomplish the following:

·         Earn a course grade of 85% or higher.

·         Earn an A grade in Scholarly Responsibility.

·         Achieve Honors designation on specific assignments, assessments, and/or projects.  This will be described in greater detail by your instructors.

Homework     Integrated Studies students will have homework at least three nights per week in each of their core classes.  The majority of daily assignments will be written in the logbook.  For full credit, work must be on time, legible, and organized, with all responses written as complete ideas.  Late work severely impacts students’ grades.

Discipline       We believe that all students deserve to have a safe, productive learning environment.  We also believe that all students can demonstrate self-discipline and appropriate behavior.  We will not tolerate behavior that disrupts teaching or the learning of others.  Ten percent of every student’s grade is based on his or her responsibility as a scholar.  Please refer to the Scholarly Responsibility document for more information.

Extra Help      We strongly recommend that students make good use of our after school Homework Help Center.  Students are also encouraged to make appointments with their teachers for assistance outside of class time.  Parents and guardians are encouraged to check their child’s progress using the Source and to contact teachers using email.  To set up a meeting with your child’s teachers, please call the 10th grade counselor, Kate Reynolds, at 206-252-3680.
