Epidemic Project “Kick Off”
Notes for Teachers Period 2 5 minutes Intro Journal Write: “How do the PEST norms contribute to your epidemic?” 10 minutes Tuberculosis Video Clip <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/educators/teachstuds/svideos.html> 5 minutes Distribute Colored Tickets, students tape to chests, and head to designated room. Arrive NO LATER than 9:45. Most likely, there will be no break between 2nd and 3rd periods today. Torvik-cafeteria Feigal-Stickles-PAC Dullum-LRC Simulation Once students are seated and quiet, biology teachers will explain simulation to students Prisoners and Guards will get a “two-person” head start Students exchange fluids as directed and sit down when done After 2 exchanges by Prisoners and Guards, 2 Prisoners are “released” and given a new ID tags to exchange with General Population After exchanging: Three teachers test student cups Students with positive test stand and data is collected on poster paper Period 3 20 minutes Discuss simulation and collected data 1. is primarily affected by the epidemic?
2. How does the epidemic spread to others in this simulation? In “real life”? (refer to TB video 2nd period) 3. How does MDR TB get outside of the prison walls? 4. What norms (circumstances) have contributed to the epidemic? 5. Classify these norms according to the PEST subtopics. 15 minutes Read NPR “Man Eluded Attempts to Control Deadly TB Strain” 20 minutes Listen to NPR report, discuss Social and Political issues <http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10554040> Period 4 10 minutes Hand out (or students take out) Puzzle Poster Description/Rubric sheet and read over with kids 15 minutes Student work time-divide up the tasks, exchange contact information, etc. 10 minutes Show students how to find Source Material using NHHS website, library link 20 minutes Students work time with Exit Ticket (1 per group) 1.
