First Week of Ninth Grade

I. Overview of what we have been doing the first week:

  • Welcoming students
  • Familiarizing students with the schedule
  • Study Hall - Explanation of why 9th graders don't have a Study Hall class but on their schedule, SH represents the additional time 9th grades spend in Block I and Block II.
  • 9th graders either have Language Arts/Social Studies classes or Health/Science classes and will change to the other block classes at the quarter
  • Gathering the green parent/student information sheets and the summer reading assignments.
  • Sorting out locker problems(!)
  • Setting up log books in academy blocks
  • Going over Course Expectations (ask your students to see these for all of their courses if they have not shown them to you)
  • Mentorship is an advisory or homeroom-type class where students will do their registration for next year's classes, learn about the four-year graduation plan, hear about the service learning graduation requirement and do guidance activities and lessons throughout the year.
  • Mentorship is a required, Pass/Fail, credit class.
  • Ninth graders will have their mentorship teacher for their freshman and sophomore years.
  • Book chats are ten percent of the Language Arts grade:
  • Students will select their own reading material
  • Students pursuing the honors designation will need LA teacher approval of their selection
  • The required number of pages needs to be completed during the two quarters in which the student has
    Language Arts
  • 300 pages are required each quarter the student has LA; 600 pages are required for the honors designation
  • Students will schedule “book chats” with the mentorship teacher
