Project Summary

·    Alex Cho Snyder, Doug Winslow and Henry Kleaveland created a song to illustrate beliefs and figures that tie in with Latin America, daily life and revolution.
·    The group chose a fast paced beat that used the guitar and many percussion instruments.
·    Once their background music was chosen, Doug and Alex began to learn the melody and scale of the song so they could play their trumpet and organ in tune with the beat.
·    Each of them improvised a solo for one of Henry’s verses.
·    Henry wrote a two-verse rap to go over the song about the people in power in different Latin American nations as well as the United States, and how they play into daily life of the Latin Americans.
·    Henry also wrote about his views concerning Ronald Reagan.
·    He wanted to show that there are different faces that one can label a person with.
·    The news labeled Reagan as a sort of savior who stopped the cold war with his bare hands, however, he is also remembered for his part in United States relations with Latin American countries like Nicaragua.
·    He supported Somoza and his oppressive rule, which damaged the people and their present connection to the U.S.
·    The rule by Somoza negatively influenced daily life.
·    When the Sandinistas came to power after Somoza, Reagan disapproved of them entirely because he thought that they were down right evil.
·    The Sandinistas pissed Reagan off because their government didn’t benefit the U.S. economically.
·    Henry’s goal for writing this song was to show both sides to a story.
·    He expressed his views on many factors such as the Zapatistas, Sandinistas, Che Guevara, capitalism, power, drugs, the U.S., Nicaragua, the people, the land, jobs, stability, poverty, injustice.
·    By showing the stakeholders and their goals and motives, Henry is showing Latin American daily life.
·    He is showing what they do (work, play, rebel, live) and why they do it (stability, freedom, land).
The song was meant to emphasize that one shouldn’t believe everything that one hears and that one should investigate for themselves.

“Reagan has just died, this ties a lot back to Latin America.  Reagan was such a key part to our relationship to Latin America.  Everyone acts like because he died, we should be in mourning; but I think that he had a different legacy then they show in the media.”                     -Henry Kleaveland

If I was Latin,                                                                           Guns would of takin’ care of me,
Che Guevara be me my soldier,
Till the power buries me.
Henry writing lyrics
Army’s gotchu running,
No loving,
Reagan’s evil eyes missed the 2nd coming.

Project Summary

Literature? Performance? How do they go together you ask? Well in this certain project, a group of lucky students were blessed with this tricky assignment. Emily Rude, Kai Amaral, Caitlin Monsma and a randomly disappearing Josh Rainey took on this assignment with delightful passion. The main theme for our class was Daily life and Revolution of Latin America. What this group decided to do was show how poetry fits into the picture. What they did to express this was to do sort of a play/poetry reading with the wonderful use of marionettes. With this they try to put across the message of how influential poetry is, among the common people. They throw in lots of hidden political symbolism, and shots toward the dictatorship type government. Also, showing how people used poetry during tough times for influence, entertainment, and self-expression.

Way of life And Revolution in Latin America
Drama Group
Project Summary

Latin America offers so many different aspects of daily life involved with revolution to portray. The drama group chose to show the power of religion through everyday Latin American life. Sophie Reiser, Ashley Wraspir, and Ali Sargent star in this imaginative play called “Los Dos Compadres: The true path to happiness.”

Los Dos Compadres is a story about two hardworking friends who have different opinions about the path to happiness. The friends argue whether it is religion or good strong work ethics that are the solution to despair and the path to happiness. In the midst of the play, the devil is introduced into the scenario, confusing the two friends and causing problems.

In Latin America religion, mainly Catholicism, is an important and powerful way of everyday life. Religion is a way for people to channel their emotions, and also to cause revolution. The church has been and active force in fighting oppression in countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and more. IN other cases the church has opposed revolutionary groups like the Sandinistan’s in Nicaragua.

The path to happiness in Latin America may be through faith, but most social leaders would argue that is the people who must make justice.                                          -Oliver Mounce
