Latin
American Project '04
Reed’s Group

Project/Intro:
The Latin American mural project is the final project of the year in
which the students combine all of the information they have gained in
the semester about our neighbors to the south. The project combines
different forms of expression through art, including a mural, drama,
music, literature, and a video. Our class in particular decided on the
theme “global power is a question of balance.” In the students
work, our theme is expressed through the topics revolution/ oppression,
magical realism/surrealism, environment/nature, and ingenious
cultures. It wasn’t an easy road to get here though. We went
through sixteen overhead pages with ideas ranging from “globalization
is running the world”, to what global power really is. Finally after
about two days of class time we came up with our theme, “Global Power
Is a Question of Balance”.
Mural:
For the mural aspect of this project, the students show the struggle
between trandition and globalization. They express this by using
symbols of a scale weighing objects, representating globalization and
traditional Latin American culture. Another way they represent this
concept is to have a gradual change from trandition (on the left) as it
is slowly polluted by the modern side/globilization (on the right).
Video
In the form of a video, the students address the topic of global trade
in Latin American and the effect it has on the people. They
accomplished this by using two monologues, the people vs. corporation.
Performances:
The students address our theme, "Global Power is a Question of Balance"
through three different types of performances using drama, music, and
literature.
