Kalabe, Javier, John, these are the names of tenth grade Nathan
Hale students who are going to do an reenactment of "The Switchman"
written by Juan Jose Arreola. The Switchman is a magical realism story
about life.
They plan to edit the
original story of the Switchman to incorporate ideas about Latin
American revolution, environment, and indigeous cultures.
For revolution, they aim to
portray how dependent people are on trains for transportation, and that life
without trains would be |
dratisiclly
different, almost like a revolution.
To tie in environment concerns into
the story, they rewrote the orignal version of the Switchman to include
a part about how humankind cuts down trees and harms wildlife in order
to build more cities.
While they
performing this splendid play, they will have some music of the
indigeous cultures of Latin America streaming in the background. This
spectacle is a must see and I reccommend anyone to watch this perfomace. |

At the beginning, these students dreaded doing another project
for school. This was their final project for the year and it was
important that they do well on it. They were assigned to create, script,
and present a performace about globalization in Latin America. This was
not a easy task to accomplish, but they were not going to abandon the
assignment. So they began doing research.
After
they completed their research, they began scripting out a performace
that is a mixture of acting and magical realism. They spent time
scripting the performace to make sure that they would incorporate all
the requirements needed.

After they written out the
script, they began practicing performing. They had to memorize their
lines, act with emotion, and be ready for to perform in front of their
peers.
