Literature
Globalizing What?
This group's mission was to express their views on globalization through peices of  literature. They chose to compose their own poetry and perform it by having one girl read it and the other two act it out. They used homemade costumes and props to really make their poems come to life. Through this dramatic performance the three group members gave the audience a look into the harsh reality that is globalization in Latin America today. Their poems are displayed below.

Globalized.

The people bustle down the busy city street,
And small dust storms erupt at their feet,
They go to the market, but all the stores are closed,
Because of NAFTA, World Bank and WTO.

These organizations give countries a loan,
Third world nations use the funds to build bridges and lines for the phone.
But the interest on this money makes taxes quite high,
Causing the economy to plummet and unemployment to fly.

And so the business on the road shut down,
While McDonalds and Starbucks spring up from the ground,
Suddenly Mexico’s lost its salsa and spice,
But look at that Coke billboard–doesn’t
it look nice?

The people are smothered in Nike logos,
They also wear Adidas and US brand name clothes,
No more do they adorn their cultural dress,
Their fashion sense is being oppressed.

Trade begins to slowly increase,
They are taking in more imports at least,
Computers, cell phones,
TV’s and more,
The first world is sending in gadgets galore.

The loans and trade items come hand in hand,
Not so great for the future, but in the present it’s grand!
Packages and bills have been mailed with a label no to be missed,
“From First World with love and sealed with a kiss.”

It’s a high price for this country to modernize,
But in the end will they win the prize?
No longer do countries fight to be the best,
But rather, they struggle to become the most like the U.S.

Globalizing what?
They see us everywhere and fear--
     Disney in Lebanon and practically
     everywhere else...
Starbucks in the Middle East, Central
     America and South America...
     McDonalds in Bahrain, Mexico, Saudi
     Arabia, Chile, Jordan, Lebanon...
We see them everywhere and fear--
     American Airports
     American Borders
     American Bridges and Buildings
The War on Terrorism news briefings...
They see our culture invading--
Mickey Muse ears and jeans instead of
the protection of the Hijab veil...
     McMuffins and McNuggets instead of
Sahoor and Ramadan; instead of mole
     and tortillas...
Does Starbucks really have anything to
teach Arabia, Costa Rica and Brazil
     about coffee?
We see their terrorism invading--
     Weapons of mass destruction/Where
     are they?
     Dirty bombs and suicide bombers/Who
     are they?
What threat level are we at today/
     Yellow, orange or red?
American trash travels the globe by barge,
looking for shelter:
The world's refugees travel the globe by
foot, looking for safety.
We move our factories and companies to
their lands, giving their people jobs-
But taking our profits and killing their
     culture.
We call out to clean up the "American"
environment while looking away as 3
of every 4 people in the world do not
     have clean water to drink.
They call us polluters, capitalists, devils,
     killers and hate us...
We call them illiterate, heathens, Third
     World killers and hate them...
They scream with fear and hate as our
     culture bombards their mosques,
     Their families, their faiths;
And our "soldiers" destory their homes
We scream with fear and hate as their
     American-trained pilots direct our
     planes
Into our own buildings, our own people
     And their "martyrs" destroy our
     security;
Which is worse?
A nation of immigrants fears all outsiders
but immigrants still are dying to come...
Fear and hate and pollution:
     Globalized.

Nike, McDonalds, Starbucks

So many companies taking over

Mexico, Asia, Africa, America

Different strengths we all have

Diversity, majority, minority

Who's taking over

Africans, Caucasians, Mexicans, Asians

Different races we are

Equal

Right or wrong

Symbols of culture

Animals, mountain, trees, oceans

Time as it passes

Culture is everything

Culture tells who you are

Your strengths and weakness

Your symbols, your family, your pride,
youir color

I am the Great Wall of China

He is the king of Greecce

She is Mount Everest

You are the Nile River

The literature group is a fun-loving trio known to each other as MNM (both a combination of thir first initials and an homage to their love of chocolate). Megan Wilson gave us a group quote-"Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. We got performances."
