Mural
indiginous
One of the many magical realist elements that can be found in this complex piece of art is the EXXON factory that is perched atop a cloud with oil raining down to the world below. It is something that doesn't happen in real life-obviously. It symbolizes the devestating effects that the oil industry has on the environment and on Latin American culture.(seen on right)                                                                                                                                               >>>>> magical realism
Latin America is often identified
by its many diverse indigenous
cultures but globalization has
severely threatened their
survival. Big name corporations
have come and invaded small
towns. This concept is shown in
the mural by the presence of a
Mayan god holding a can of sodapop. This shows how the
culture has been infiltrated by
popular, U.S.brand-name products. (seen above)  ^

mural
Globalization has taken its toll on
the environment in Latin
America. The muralists represent
this by showing deforestation. In
addition to this they have a river
so polluted with oil (cleverly
done by having the EXXON
cloud raining oil down into the
river from above) that you
cannot see that there was ever
any water present. (seen below)

opression
The fourth aspect of our class theme of globalization was revolution/oppression. The muralists decided to represent this by showing a wrecking ball swinging at a Mayan pyramid. However, in the place of the ball is a Nike shoe. This shows how globalization is oppressive and taking the place of Latin American culture and history. (seen on left)

sketch
This is the sketch that started it all. The muralists first came up with an idea that they sketched on an 81/2 by 11 piece of paper before drawing it on the actual mural board.
After they drew the inital sketch
they transfered it to an overhead transparency which they then projected onto the board that the finished product would be produced on. Once they finished tracing the image they were ready to begin painting.

Painting was a daunting task as the members of the group worked together to carefully fill in their masterpiece. Unfortunately for them, there were no numbers. Some of the group members listen to music to help get their artistic juices flowing.
So close, yet so far. The muralists work to finish up the work they have started. Close to the home strech the mural has really taken shape. They now have to incorporate the final details that illustrate their powerful message on globalization.

group
This wild and crazy group of  artists started out with a vison of a mural that expressed their views of globalization. Over the course of one week they learned to set aside their differences and work together to create, sketch, paint and produce a work of art that they could all be proud of.
