Nathan Hale High School: Latin American Murals, 2002
These nine murals represent the creative
collaboration
of nine 10th grade Integrated Studies classes at Nathan Hale High
School.
Working under the year-long umbrella theme of social justice, a
month-long
unit focusing on Latin American culture culminated in the creation of
the
murals you see before you.
In the first three panels the central themes revolve around the
indigenous cultures of Latin America: the history, the culture, the
hardships and the
conflict with the land.
The middle panels explore themes of immigration and revolution. Issues
of the hazardous journey the immigrants faced, assimilation and the
struggle for acceptance in North America, as well as the dramatic
stories of recent revolutionary movements in Latin America are
represented here.
Finally, the rich artistic and musical diversity of Latin American
culture is celebrated in the final panels.
This artistic body of work represents the work of hundreds of young
students working as artists, designers and art historians. The working
process was truly an adventure of both the mind and the spirit. We hope
you have as much fun viewing our murals as we had creating them.
