The Library: Past, Present, and Purpose

The Nathan Hale High School Library was opened to Seattle students in 1963. In 1975, a renovation project yielded a much larger, more open library space complete with conference rooms and processing area. Today it exists to support academic achievement for every student. For this purpose, the librarian acts as information manager, reading advocate, and skills instructor. We provide access to printed and electronic materials that relate to the curricula in this school. This material includes more than 20,000 volumes, a comprehensive reference section, a wide range of periodicals, and electronic databases. The library establishes cooperative relationships with neighboring library systems, and can run preliminary searches of their holdings to expand the support base for our patrons.

Several years ago, Nathan Hale High School staff made teaching critical thinking skills a school-wide priority. The librarian reinforces this skill development by the use of The Five Habits of Mind. Personalized education has been the focus at Hale for several years. The library is a place where students can meet peers, staff members, or the librarian to discuss what is happening in their studies, reading, and in their lives. The library provides a safe, comfortable environment where students can study, visit, or enjoy a calm moment out of their busy day.
