Artist's Statement:

Adrienne Chambers

I derived my inspiration directly from viewing Harlem Renaissance art. In this work, the main character is dancing under the sunshine of freedom for the first time. The wavy lines below him are his people's music which he can feel beneath his feet. The squiggly lines next to his knee represent the fences along the street. The black female figure on the lower left is his woman singing to him and rising above the earth. Leaving conflicts and oppression behind him, propelled by the new creativity of his Northern experience, is the figure in the upper right as he ascends upward on a cloud.
