BACK

My inspiration for this piece  was nature itself.  Trees are all around us and this particular tree perfectly represents the point I was trying to get across.  Like the country of America, a tree is one single unit consisting of countless different branches and an endless variety of leaves.  Back during the Harlem Renaissance, legal segregation was still intact even though the entire population lived together in one country.  Two worlds were created inside of one.  Many white people were rich and had good lives whereas the blacks were generally poor.  Even though blacks had just as much potential as whites, they were not given the opportunity to flourish and blossom.  The left half of my tree represents the white population.  It is symbolizing that they had countless opportunities to enrich their lives when the blacks had nothing.  The main theme of my work was crossing borders.  I selected this particular medium because it has a very distinct look and makes a bold statement.  I chose to present this idea in form of a painting because it has a very distinct look and makes a bold statement.  I chose to present this idea in form the form of a painting because it suited me well.  To begin this project I first had to think of something that would represent our nation.  Subsequently, I needed to find a way to portray the legal segregation which the separation of the tree clearly visualizes.  The lavish green suggests the whites led a prosperous and fulfilling life.  The complete lack of leaves and blossoms on the right side of the tree symbolizes the lack of opportunities and frugality of their lives.  Even with all the documentation about racism, I still find it difficult to comprehend that people were actually treated in such a manner simply de to the color of their skin.  The past cannot be changed, but we should all strive to ensure that the future will hold an equal prospect for everybody.
