THE  TEN  COMMON  PRINCIPLES
pic of many hands holding up the world

Each month this year we will focus as a community on one of the 10 Common Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES).

September’s Principle is:
Learning to use one's mind well.

"The school should focus on helping young people learn to use their minds well. Schools should not be "comprehensive" if such a claim is made at the expense of the school's central intellectual purpose.
"

STUDENT PROJECT: MATH THROUGH THE AGES
kepler's law
Our Nathan Hale Math 2 classes have created a "Math History Timeline" in which each student has createed a one-page creative report on a mathmetician or topic from Math history - including current topics. These have been placed in chronological order along the math hall.   This has been done at Hale for many years and constitutes a small tradition here.  [see more]

"Here's proof that the smallest acts can bring about the biggest change. Laura D'Asaro and Hilary Lim watch at Matthews Beach Park in Seattle as a construction crew installs playground equipment, paid for by the $13,000 in lemonade they sold last summer."  [read Seattle Times article]

A POSITIVE VIEW OF NATHAN HALE HIGH SCHOOL

A class of  ninth grade students were recently approached with the simple question: "What do you like about Nathan Hale High School?"  Their answers are quite interesting, particularily because they validate the success of some of our main school reform efforts over the past several years.
