Nathan Hale High School, a Seattle Public
School serving a diverse
population, is recognized locally and nationally as a leader in
educational reform. Nathan Hale is a member of the Coalition of Essential
Schools (since 1997). The school’s reform efforts benefit from numerous
grants (most recently, the Small Learning Communities Grant) and other
special funding, including $10,000 toward continuation of the After School
Homework Help Center.
The centerpiece of the reform is 9th grade academies, which feature small
classes (23 students per class in 9th grade) and the 10th grade IS classes
(integrated studies) which feature integration of English, social studies and
science wherein students complete four major projects during the year
utilizing knowledge acquired from all three disciplines. Academies and
Integrated Studies allow for block scheduling, a focus on projects and
personalization of instruction. Honors options are available in the majority
of classes. The school’s program includes a mentorship program for all
students, a senior project and required community service. AP
opportunities are offered in 11th and 12th grades.
