Title I/LAP (Learning Assistance Program)
The Title I/LAP (Learning Assistance Program) is a program that provides school-wide support to students who need additional instruction in reading and math to reach academic standards.
The curriculum of Title I supplements regular classroom teaching. Students are selected based on pretests, the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) test and teacher judgement. Basic skills in reading, language arts/communication and mathematics are addressed at each grade level on a daily basis.
At Greenwood, small groups are established in the "pull-out" model. Eight to ten students from grades 1 - 5 meet daily in room 308 and for 45 minutes work very diligently improving their skills in phonics, vocabulary and dictionary skills, comprehension, as well as writing and listening. Students learn in cooperative groups, with a partner, and independently. They take pride in sharing their work and demonstrating new abilities in front of the group. Applying good presentation skills and respectful listening behavior is practiced by all students. Often, there are many opportunities for children to use their artistic abilities in creating art pieces to enhance their reading and writing.
