Second Grade
Mr. Salterberg's classroom is working on meeting the second grade benchmarks by exploring time in depth. How do you mark time? How do you tell time? What are the different measures of time? Over the course of the year we have looked at the life cycle of a plant and asked how a seed grows into a plant and back to a seed and how that relates to the whole idea of time and nature. We are exploring time with our imaginations as well, by looking into time travel and immortality.
The exploration of time fits into all subjects. Here's how:
Math: Telling time, calendar math, time in rhythm patterns, time and music. We are using the Investigations Math Program with this exploration and to meet the other math concepts that do not neatly fit into this expedition.
Language Arts: We are reading and writing memories of our lives and the lives of others. We will take our memories to the Greenwood Senior Center and share moments of our lives. Then the seniors will share memories with us. We will look into how we can travel in time by listening to our elders.
Science: Life Cycles
Social Studies: We are doing a service project of creating a playback theater performance for the seniors to show them their memories.
We are having a great time and the year is shaping up nicely.
