Academics & Curriculum
Greenwood fosters academic excellence by ensuring that all children experience joy in learning. Teachers employ project-based, hands-on approaches to bring subjects to life. Curriculum is designed to facilitate learning for students of all academic levels.
Core Program Highlights:
Literacy Our teachers provide instruction that integrates whole language and phonics techniques.
Science Greenwood participates in several inquiry-based programs, including the National Science Foundation Program and Finding Urban Nature (sponsored by the National Audubon Society).
Physical Education All K-5 students participate in a variety of activities designed to make physical movement fun and challenging. Our programs enhance self-concept, teach sportsmanship, cooperation and responsibility; are non-threatening and use relevant and age-appropriate curricula.
Library Students begin a life-long love of reading with regular visits to the library. Story times and companion activities help unlock the world of wonder that awaits them in the world of books.
Art and Music Every grade receives weekly vocal music instruction using age-appropriate, interactive and fun musical themes. Beginning in fourth grade, optional instrumental music instruction is available. Art is incorporated into class projects on a regular basis.
Foreign Language American Cultural Exchange provides on-site Spanish instruction before school for interested K-5 children. This is a currently a fee program. We will be exploring avenues to integrate Foreign Language instruction into our regular curricula in the next 2-3 years.
Special Ed Our special education staff includes a resource teacher, an intermediate teacher and an instructional assistant who work to meet student's special needs in the areas of reading, writing, math and behavior management. We also have a reading specialist who provides students with additional help in reading and math.
Aviation Students (K-5) learn about the broad subject of aviation. Fifth grade students participate in model building and learn to fly airplanes (Cessna 172's).
