First Grade
In the first grade at Greenwood, we spend most of our time learning the basics: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.
In learning Reading and Writing, we practice many skills such as Handwriting, Spelling, Phonics, Journal writing and Sight Words. An environment full of books for leisure reading is provided.
In Mathematics, we work with the basic concepts of addition and subtraction through double-digit numbers without regrouping. Time, money, patterns, measurement, fractions and geometric shapes in two and three dimensions are also explored. Each concept is introduced in a 'hands on' manner giving the children a deeper understanding of what they are doing before they are required to do paper and pencil work.
Through Art and Science we extend what we've learned in these subject areas as well as explore artistic elements and scientific inquiry.
