Fifth Grade
Fifth-graders in Room 303 spend the year studying and preparing for middle school. We read all types of materials, including The Seattle Times. Writing in journals, as well as mastery of narrative, expository, and persuasive styles, helps us succeed on the Direct Writing Assessment. Higher-level mathematical skills include computation and problem-solving with place value, fractions, decimals, and algebra. Social studies curriculum covers American history and analysis of current events. Studies of the human body, including an introduction to puberty, are presented in Health. Science units emphasizing geology and biology use materials provided by the National Science Foundation. A final highlight of fifth grade is an outdoor educational experience for several days in May.
