From our Principal...

Greenwood is implementing the fifth phase of school transformation. This
phase calls for continuing to implement a constructivist, hands-on, experiential
approach to teaching and learning. We continue to devote the first few weeks of
school implementing "a culture of quality" - One where all students
practice behavioral expectations in "ordinary" circumstances to better equip
themselves to exhibit exemplary behaviors when they encounter "extra-ordinary"
social/emotional events. Research informs us that the social and emotional
development of the child is as important as academic development. During our
initial weeks of school, we strive to "create self-control in children." John
Dewey, in his pamphlet, Experience and Education, writes, "The ideal aim of
education is creation of power of self-control" ['the ability to frame purposes,
to judge wisely…']. (Dewey 1963, 64).
"Greenwood Elementary School is committed to the importance of individual learning, community involvement, and service to community.
Likewise, we welcome and celebrate diversity of our staff and students. We support students' efforts to achieve high-quality work, and to become personally and socially responsible citizens. Our constructivist learning environment supports hands-on, project-based/experiential learning, where children do, make, question, experience and produce." There is a Chinese proverb that fittingly describes our program:
- Hearing is forgetting
- Seeing is remembering
- But doing is understanding
Our school is open and transparent. Please join with us to make your contribution of time, effort, and whatever other resources you care to offer to make Greenwood an ideal elementary learning environment.
